Raising an Olympian – Gabby Douglas, Natalie Hawkins – Learning to Let Go

Raising an Olympian – Gabby Douglas, Natalie Hawkins – Learning to Let Go

Natalie starts the video by saying, “they say it takes a village to raise a child”.   In 2008, the family watched the Olympics together and Gabby said “wow, look at Shawn and her coach (Liang Chow), they look like they are really having a good time, I would like for him to be my coach.”  Natalie said I have a child who would never leave my site, now wants to move across the country.  Luckily they found Missy Parton and her family in West Des Moines, Iowa.  The Parton’s welcomed Gabby in to the family as one of their own and allowed Natalie stayed involved in every day of her life.

In 2011, Natalie and her other children flew to Iowa and spent Christmas with Gabby and her host family.  When it was time for them to leave, Gabby wanted to go home with them, she missed them and was really homesick.  Natalie told Gabby “life is not easy, you have to fight and refuse to quit….you have team members, you have a country your representing.”   When Natalie returned home she video chatted with Gabby, and Gabby said “I’m going to stay mom, I’m going to fight for my dream.”   Gabby changed after that moment.

The video ends with Natalie saying “Letting go of Gabby was one of the hardest things I ever had to do in my life, but now it is one of the most rewarding things that I’ve ever got to experience in my life.   There is no greater joy than for a parent to see their child reach their dream.  I’ve raised an Olympian….Wow…that’s a powerful statement right there.

Gabby wins Gold – 2012 Olympics Women’s Gymnastics All-Around Champion

2012 Olympics Women’s Gymnastics Individual All-Around Results

Gabby Douglas 2012 Olympic Champion

Gabrielle Douglas has added another gold medal to her collection, winning the all-around gymnastics title with an amazing performance.   Gabby has been incredibly consistent during the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.  She started with a solid effort in the qualification round, was tremendous in the team competition and was at her best today!  Victoria Komova of Russia was also spectacular, but Gabby scored .5 points higher than Victoria in the vault, and that was the difference.  Ali Raisman tied with Aliya Mustafina for the third best score, but Mustafina won the tiebreaker for the bronze medal.

Douglas is the fourth United States gymnast to win the all-around gold medal in women’s gymnastics,  joining Mary Lou Retton, Shannon Miller and Nastia Liukin.

Gabby is the first woman of color to win the all-around.  Truly an inspiration!   Congratulations Gabby!

Shawn Johnson in promo commercials for Matthew Perry’s new NBC show Go On

Shawn Johnson has been appearing in new television ads, fresh for the Olympics, for Matthew Perry’s new NBC sitcom “Go On“.

In the first promo Shawn is seated with the rest of the “Go On” therapy group and explains that “I just didn’t have anybody in Des Moines that knew what I was going through….”

In the second promo, Shawn is back as a special guest and since it is a group where they talk about loss, Matthew Perry asks her to share what it felt like to lose at the Olympics.  Three silver medals; loss, loss, loss.  At the end Matthew Perry tells her “You are a winner to us”.  Shawn replies with “No, no, I really am a winner, I have a gold medal”.   Pretty funny stuff.
